The essentials
- Water changes: Every 1–2 weeks; once a week in summer.
- Water: Room-temperature tap or mineral water works well. Please don’t use purified or distilled water. Tap water usually doesn’t need to sit out overnight.
- Light: A softly lit spot indoors is just right; a few hours under a desk lamp works too. Keep me out of direct sunlight.
- Temperature: Keep my water between 10–25°C (50–77°F); around 22°C (72°F) is ideal. If the room temperature rises above 30°C (86°F), help me cool down. Water above 35°C (95°F) is too hot for me.
- Nutrients: I don’t need fertilizer as part of my regular care. If your kit includes a nutrient vial, use it only during setup and follow the instructions. Don’t add more, and skip it in hot weather.
Settling me in
- Rinse the decorative gravel once or twice. If your kit includes Maifan stone, rinse it several times.
- Fill my bottle with room-temperature tap or mineral water, then place me in it. Please don’t use purified or distilled water.
- If I arrive a little squashed, blot away excess water with a clean paper towel, then gently roll me between damp palms. Please don’t pull at my strands or squeeze me too hard.
- Find me a spot with soft indoor light, away from direct sunlight, and let me settle in.
My regular care
Change my water every 1–2 weeks, or once a week in summer. If my bottle or gravel looks dirty, rinse it with water—no soap or cleaning products. If I start to look fuzzy, my strands are probably growing. Roll me gently between damp palms for a few seconds to help me stay round. The little light in my cork stopper is just for display, not for helping me grow. Switch it on whenever you’d like a little glow.
When the weather gets hot
If the room temperature rises above 30°C (86°F), move me to a cool, shaded spot or an air-conditioned room. If it’s still too warm, place me in the sealed travel bottle that came with my kit, then put the bottle in the refrigerator—not the freezer. I can usually stay in the fridge for 1–2 months. Change my water about once a month while I’m in there; when the weather cools down, bring me back to my usual spot.

If I look or feel different
- No bubbles? That doesn’t mean I’m dead. If I’m still green, I’m okay.
- I may develop tiny bubbles or float a little now and then. That can happen during photosynthesis, but it doesn’t need to happen every day.
- If I turn yellow or white, feel unusually soft, or arrive damaged, take a photo and contact the shop where you bought me.
Taking me along
My travel bottle is for short trips, not as my permanent home. If I’m in it, change my water at least once every 7 days. Give me fresh water before your trip, and keep me out of direct sunlight. My glass bottle and small accessories aren’t toys or food. Keep them out of reach of children under three years old and away from pets that like to chew. Don’t drink the water or nutrient solution. Wash your hands after handling either one, and never pour me or my water into a pond, river, lake, or drain.
